The
grounds house a number of buildings of high historical value such as the
main church and chapels, interior patios and cloisters, all of which
have been structurally restored and/or converted into art galleries,
exhibition halls, conference rooms, bedroom suites and a fully-equipped
art studio. The surrounding buildings, amongst them the Pilgrim’s Chapel
(now a guest-house), The Gate House hotel, and two cottages in the
valley house additional accommodation, dining rooms, a bar, lounge
areas, terraces and the reception area. The setting is magical, with
peacocks having free range of the grounds and shepherds grazing their
sheep on the surrounding land. |
The
premises feature abundant fresh water, with an artesian well which is
the main reason this site has been inhabited since time immemorial and
also the reason the Carthusian monks built their charterhouse on the
remains of previous settlements. The property went through a period of
deterioration, with plants and trees growing out of the ruins.
Restoration works have been substantial, the roofs and ceilings of the
main buildings have been restored, and so have the monumental kitchens
and the monk’s dining-hall, and the former water-operated mill adapted
into a swimming pool and reservoir.
